Open Source Software Initiative
Many enterprises have forged relationships exclusively with commercially prepared products for reasons of perceived instability in the open source world. In recent years events have transpired that have given large enterprises reason to examine the use of assets this community has to offer and relate it to company objectives.

Open Source Software ( OSS ) refers to the community of free applications and systems being written by developers around the globe. The source code of these applications and systems would be made available to the general public with relaxed or non-existent intellectual property restrictions. The number of Open Source Software applications available today is an example to show the increasing demand by consumers.

It is important to recognize that associated costs with developing software, such as gathering requirements through to testing and support, are still the same, be it licensed software or open source software. However there may be significant gains if open source software is used by an enterprise to substitute proprietary software that earns large license fees for relatively commonplace functionality that is available in the open source world. And it is here that Torry Harris can help. We are strong supporters of the Open Source Software community ( OSS ) and have first hand experience using and evaluating open-source products for the more demanding enterprise projects. We believe open-source software forms an essential part of today’s software landscape.

Services provided by Torry Harris include:
  • Building new applications using open source programs, specifically in the web-application, integration and SOA space
  • Migrating applications to Open Source from a licensed product, thereby reducing vendor dependency and cost of acquisition
  • Creating accessories for open source programs, training literature and support programs
  • Contributing applications and frameworks to the Open Source Community
