API  Factory  Model

API Factory model is a proven concept to succeed with full life-cycle API delivery and management. This highly refined, lean model helps churn out large volumes of standardized APIs with predictability in time, cost and quality.

API Factory Framework

Key Phases:

API identification or farming is conducted by a team of subject matter experts, who understand both the business and technical aspects of the API economy. They study the customer’s ecosystem and look at what businesses might benefit from the customer’s APIs.

API delivery phase starts with gathering requirements and is complete after taking the APIs into production and post-production monitoring, using an agile sprint model. The full cycle involves evaluation of requirements, designs, test driven development (TDD), E2E use case testing, production deployment and monitoring.

Post production support phase uses a robust ticketing mechanism that allows API consumers to log tickets, to be addressed by the operations team. SLAs are driven by the customer experience norms of the enterprise. A monitoring and alarm generation platform chosen carefully along with the customer, completes this setup.

Delivery Model

The API Factory follows an agile, sprint model for delivery. Primarily, it consists of three phases:

Gather – where the integration front-door team interacts with the business and IT teams to gather requirements, analyse them and identify API candidates. The output from this phase is a roadmap, aligned with business priorities.

Agree – a governance board is constituted, consisting of IT and business stakeholders and lead by the Integration Head. An API roadmap is presented at this stage, which is debated and agreed upon.

Deliver – the API roadmap forms the main input to the API Factory team – which then builds the APIs, tests them and delivers them into production.
